A milestone for Europe: EU Commission selects STACKIT as a provider of sovereign cloud services

The European Commission is sending a clear signal for the EU's digital autonomy: STACKIT has been selected as one of four European providers to build and operate the EU institutions' cloud infrastructure over the next six years as part of a strategic tender.

With a total contract value of 180 million euros, the EU Commission is underlining its goal of increasing strategic control over key technologies and consistently reducing dependencies on non-European providers. The fact that STACKIT has been awarded this important contract is proof that sovereign cloud solutions "Made in Europe" have reached market maturity for the top league.

Validated sovereignty instead of vague promises

The selection of providers was based on the Commission's strict Cloud Sovereignty Framework. This framework measures sovereignty based on eight key objectives - from legal and operational control to supply chain transparency and strict compliance with EU law.
For STACKIT, this award is a confirmation of its own strategy:

  • Sovereign-by-design: our infrastructure offers technical control layers that effectively prevent access by third countries.
  • No vendor lock-in: By using open standards, the customer's ability to act is guaranteed at all times.
  • Highest compliance: Fulfilling the rigorous test criteria of the EU Commission validates STACKIT as a reliable partner for highly regulated sectors.

A signal for the European economy

The Commission's decision sets an example for companies and authorities throughout Europe. It shows that digital sovereignty is no longer a theoretical vision, but a ready-to-use reality. By awarding the contract to a consortium of four European partners, the EU is also promoting a diverse and resilient ecosystem that enables genuine freedom of choice.

Setting the strategic course at EU level

The awarding of the tender is a central component of the EU Commission's efforts to strengthen control over its digital infrastructures and key technologies. By selecting four parallel providers, the Commission is deliberately focusing on diversification and resilience in order to avoid one-sided dependencies. This step clearly shows that what for a long time appeared to be an unavoidable path due to a lack of tangible European alternatives is now giving way to genuine freedom of choice. The Commission's decision thus marks a new standard for what sovereignty means in cloud practice. With STACKIT, a tested and powerful sovereign alternative is now available.
